Frequently Asked Questions

What are the age group of the attending athletes?
Athlete ages will range from ages 11 thru 18, however, there are no age restrictions.

Does a parent, coach or both attend with the athlete?
The ratio of parents or coaches to an attending athlete is a matter of personal preference. We recommend each athlete attend with a parent or coach. Other scenarios may include:

  • an athlete attending with two parents

  • an athlete with a parent and coach

  • several athletes with one coach or parent

Important to keep in mind is that the Athlete Action Planning Workshop is a collaborative effort between the athlete and parent/coach. If one coach or parent is attending with several athletes, it will make this part of the conference challenging.

Will there be organized transportation?

No. Participants are expected to manage transportation themselves.  The venue is centrally located in Toronto at 141 Wilson Avenue. Close to HWY 401 and a short TTC bus ride from York Mills or Wilson Station.

How long is the conference?
The conference will be Saturday all-day (8:00am - 4pm)  and half-day on Sunday (8:00am - noon).

Will food be provided?
Refreshments, breakfast (both days), and lunch on Saturday are included.

My sport doesn't seem to be covered by a speaker. Will this be relevant to me?
The conference is relevant to all high-performance athletes and their families/coaches. NextGEN/NextSTEP is designed to be universal to all sports focusing on foundational elements of driving success in sport and in life.

How do I know if the young athlete is high-performance enough?
High performance is subjective. Athletes with the most to gain from NextGEN/NextSTEP are those with the desire to be among the top in their peer group. They aspire to play college/university level varsity sport and may have ambitions or are currently involved in provincial, national, international, and pro level competition.

What's the Athlete Action Plan?
An Athlete Action Plan is a Strategic Planning exercise for athletes. Through group facilitation, each athlete, alongside their parent/coach, will establish personal priorities and a 12-month plan to help them achieve athletic, academic, and personal goals.

The conference is in-person.  What if Covid restrictions prevent in-person events?
If in-person events are not allowed by the government or venue, NextGEN/NextSTEP will move seamlessly to an online environment.  As much notice as possible will be provided in this circumstance.
